Recording-breaking Year in Extramural Research Funding

The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center had a record-breaking year generating direct costs of more than $17.3 million in extramural research funding, including more than $10.6 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Wilbur Lam to Deliver 2019 ASPHO Frank Oski Memorial Lecture in New Orleans
The Frank A. Oski Lectureship Memorial Award recognizes an outstanding clinical or laboratory investigator conducting cutting-edge research in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology. As this year's national award recipient, Dr. Lam will give a plenary talk at the annual meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in the spring of 2019.

Alora will serve as the new Vice President of Hematology/Oncology at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. She joined Children's in January from Cancer Treatment Centers of America where she most recently served as Vice President of Clinical Transformation and was responsible for driving the development and execution of oncology service line strategy for the entire health system. "Smartphone App for Non-invasive Detection of Anemia Using Only Patient-sourced Photos"

Robert Mannino and fellow biomedical engineers from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University School of Medicine, and the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center have developed a smartphone app with the aim of non-invasive detection of anemia. Instead of a blood test, the app uses photos of someone's fingernails taken on a smartphone to determine whether the level of hemoglobin in their blood seems low.
