In 2004 the first western style ED in the post Soviet region was opened at Iashvili Children's Central Hospital in Tbilisi Georgia. Prior to the opening, hospital based emergency medical services did not exist as they do in the United States and other parts of the world. Over the last 4 years Drs Lanski and Goo have lead the program to aid in opening and training the staff working in emergency medicine.
Aside from on-site clinical education, training courses in PALS, basic wound repair, fracture care, basic trauma management and triage principles have been given with the help of members from the Emergency Pediatric Group of Atlanta. The department has shown great promise and has helped show the Georgian people a new paradigm in the delivery of emergent care.
Our current project involves development of an adult emergency department as well as a national emergency medical system. This project is a joint venture between faculty from Emory's Departments of Pediatric and Adult Emergency Medicine as well as Surgery.
This project is run under the direction of the Partners for International Development, an Atlanta based, not for profit organization working to aid developing countries with basic infrastructure change and improvement. Funding for this project has come from USAID as well as Emory University.
