Since January 2003, Dr. Carlos Delgado and Dr. David Goo have been part of a yearly medical/dental mission to
Honduras sponsored by Gehlen Mission Honduras of Lemars Iowa. The group has provided medical and dental care at several villages in Central Honduras including an indigenous tribe at Montaa de la Flor an anthropological reserve site.
In the near future we plan to do 2-3 medical trips a year and bring along Emory pediatric residents, PEM fellows as part of their International Medicine elective, Master of Public Healthstudents from Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, and other allied healthcare workers to provide sustainable and continuous medical care to this population.
On average we provide care to approximately 1200 Hondurans in a 5 day work week. The patients range from newborns to 80 years old; however, a quarter of all patients are under 6 years old. The most common ailments are respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatological. There is severe malnutrition and parasitosis.
