The Department of Pediatrics is affiliated
with Emory University School of Medicine and Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta. This relationship bridges one of the most well endowed private universities with the largest children's healthcare systems in the country. The Children's system includes 3 hospitals with over 500 beds, numerous satellite facilities around the metro Atlanta area, and a medical staff of over 1,200 physicians representing 43 pediatric specialties.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston
Children's at Egleston is directly across the street from Emory University Hospital and is an integral part of the Emory community. In 1978, the hospital entered into an agreement with Emory University School of Medicine to become the institution's pediatric teaching facility. A recently renovated Children's at Egleston features centralized cardiac services to offer families streamlined access to all components of this vital program; an enlarged Emergency department to increase capacity and improve flow; expanded outpatient clinic and patient rooms for the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's; and additional and enlarged operating rooms to accommodate more patients and allow additional space for the latest surgical equipment.
Emory University
The hospital is supported by physicians from all specialty areas, as well
as a modern radiology department, a laboratory fully operational on a 24/7 schedule,
two fully-functional modern ED's, pediatric pathology, a hospital pharmacy actively
involved in parenteral alimentation and monitoring of drug therapy, a nutrition
team, a staff of social workers available to families and physicians, and a
child life group involved in the care of patients with special problems. Patients
throughout the metropolitan area, as well as throughout Georgia and neighboring
states are referred to this 235-bed facility.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Grady Health System
ED
Children's at Hughes Spalding is in downtown Atlanta; it is owned by Grady Health System and managed by HSOC Inc., an affiliate of Children's. It is home to specialty clinics for asthma, child protection, primary care and sickle cell disease. In August 2008, Children's broke ground on the construction of a new facility at Children's at Hughes Spalding that will replace the hospital's 1952 building-originally constructed as an adult hospital-with a new, four-story facility projected to open in 2010.
