Overview Puerto Rico is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States - not quite international. However, Pediatric Emergency Medicine services are not as robust as on the mainland. One of our former fellows, Dr. Ricardo Jimenez, established The Puerto Rico Pediatric Emergency Conference in 2005. It was the first forum in Puerto Rico for the discussion of topics in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and aimed to meet the educational needs of general pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians and general physicians looking to expand their understanding of the diagnosis and management on pediatric emergencies.
Discussions in Spanish and English have included the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management on head injuries, pediatric trauma, optimal triage, the febrile infant, pain management, procedural sedation and wound/laceration repair. The course provides continuing medical education credits and is submitted to the Offices of the University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine for continued medical education by the Examination Tribunal of Doctors.
