The purpose of this study is to understand how the immune system responds to the chickenpox vaccine (VARIVAX). VARIVAX is a licensed vaccine to prevent children from getting chickenpox and has been available in the US for over 20 years. It is recommended that children receive 2 doses of VARIVAX vaccine; one dose at 12 months and a second dose at 4-6 years old.
Your child would normally receive this vaccine as part of their routine vaccinations. This is a research study because we have your child come in specifically to get VARIVAX® and we will be collecting samples from your child at different times.
Who Can Participate?
We are looking for 2 different groups of children
- Children aged 12-15 months who have NOT received the chickenpox vaccine
- Children aged 4-6 years old who have received 1 dose of chickenpox vaccine at 12-15 months old
What is involved?
The study involves 4-5 clinic visit at Emory Children’s Center over 1 year. Each visit will take between 1-2 hours. At each visit we will take a blood sample.
What are the benefits?
This study is not designed to benefit you or your child directly. The results of this study may be helpful for other children in the future.
This study is free. To say thank you, families will be compensated for their time and participation.
