General Activity: The child should participate in all age appropriate activities with special precautions using extreme caution with water, heights and heavy machinery. He/she should take showers rather than baths and should not swim in a pool, lake or ocean without supervision (if seizures remain uncontrolled). He/she should not climb heights taller than their own height. He/she should not use heavy machinery, equipment or drive a car. He/she should be encouraged to participate in as many normal childhood activities with the above exceptions according to their own age appropriate developmental abilities.

Seizure First Aid:

Prevent person from hurting himself/herself and lower to the floor and assist to side lying position if a generalized (grand mal) seizure. Protect from harm by cushioning the head.
Turn the child on their side to open the airway and allow saliva to drool out of the mouth.
NOTHING should be placed in the mouth including fingers, tongue blades, spoons or other devices.
Loosen restrictive clothing.
Remove dangerous objects from the area.
Time seizure, if the seizure lasts longer than 5-10 minutes start "Rescue Therapy" or call 911.
Rescue Therapy: Diastat mg per rectum
If trouble breathing for longer than 30 seconds, rescue breathing can be attempted (1 breath every 5 seconds), however children rarely need mouth to mouth breathing.

Emergency Services: The seizure should be observed and timed. 911 should be called if:

If the seizure continues longer than 5-10 minutes
There are repeated seizures
The child is having trouble breathing or has a dusky color with correct positioning
The child has injured himself/herself during the seizue

He/She should be allowed to sleep or rest after the seizure and then rejoin activities once he/she feels able.
