Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Do I have to pay an insurance co-payment for study visits?
- A: No, there is no insurance billing for any research procedure and no co-pay is collected for your child to participate in a clinical
study. In some trials study medication is provided free of charge, but there is no provision to cover your child’s regular asthma
medication. In nearly every trial you will be reimbursed for your time and travel, and we will cover the cost of your valet parking fo
every study visit.
- Q: Does a study visit take the place of my regular clinic visit?
- A: No, you will still need to keep all of your child’s regular pulmonary clinic appointments. If while participating in a study
you have a question about your child’s asthma, you can request to speak to the study lead physician who can work with you as well as
your child’s regular asthma provider to make certain participation in the study is best for your child.
- Q: How long do study visits last?
- A: Study visits vary widely in length. A visit can last anywhere between 30 minutes and 4 hours depending upon the number of procedures
and surveys to be completed. The study coordinator can tell you exactly how much time to allocate in advance of a visit.
- Q: Will my child have to stop taking his/her usual asthma medications before participating in a study?
- A: Typically no. Participating in a study may mean the addition of a new medication, or change in one type of medication for another
type. Clinical trials are closely supervised by regulatory agencies to make sure that volunteers receive appropriate treatment for their
asthma. Any risks associated with being in a study must be disclosed to you and your child, and steps taken to reduce risk are a key part
of any trial.
