New Faculty Development Seminar

The inaugural session of the New Faculty Development Seminar was offered in four sessions of 3-5 hours presented October through December of 2008. Faculty members new to Emory in general, and particularly those who had been in academic medicine 3 years or less, were invited to attend. Seminars were presented and workshops held by a distinguished faculty drawn from the Department of Pediatrics as well as from the broader Emory and Atlanta communities. Topics and speakers included:

Session 1

Promotion at Emory Dr. J. Devn Cornish

Session 2
Being Mentored/Mentoring Dr. Kathy Griendling
Scientific Writing Dr. Roger I. Glass

Session 3

Session 4

Participants were given preparation assignments before a number of the seminars as well as many follow-through opportunities afterward. Sessions involved hands-on assessment and learning activities, lively class and small group discussions, multimedia presentations, and informal conversations with leaders in their fields. Participants were given a series of tools to assess and plan their career progression throughout the course and were offered ongoing individual mentoring and career guidance after the course to optimize the benefits from their involvement.

It is anticipated that this course will be offered every year or two based on the number of new faculty members joining the Department.
