Research
Index and Resources
To
ensure that development funding is being used to maximize our growth
and caliber of research, we have developed a Research Metrics index
for every faculty member currently receiving development funds and
for those who .are 50% or higher research FTE. This tool will be used
to measure return on investment and can be used to demonstrate areas
of strength. It will also be helpful in identifying areas of opportunity
for additional faculty mentoring, or, as an indicator of true lack
of progress over the start-up period and thus a need to issue a letter
of non-continuation.
While some of the information included in the index is also
included in the Faculty Career Development Report and a faculty
member’s CV, having it in this index format will allow
for roll-up of information, and will lend itself to easily evaluating
the metrics we apply. Our Vice-Chair for Research/CRO is working
with his Research Advisory Committee to set the goal metrics we
feel are critical to meeting our goal of Top Ten NIH Funded DOP.
The information captured on the index includes:
• Education summary and faculty appointment and rank information
• Research mentor or mentee(s)
• Effort distribution
• Start-up fund commitment expenditure rate
• Lab development (new staff hires put in place with start-up
funds)
• Extramural proposals submitted and awards received (captures
$, PI status (PI vs. PI of a sub, vs. Co-I)
• Competitive Intramural proposals submitted and awards received
• Percentage of total lab costs covered by: a) start-up funds,
extramural funds, intramural funds.
• Indirect costs and Total Costs per square foot of assigned
lab space
• H Factor and total peer-reviewed articles, reviews and book
chapters to date
• Publications submitted, journal name, journal impact factor,
authorship (1st, middle, last) for each year
• Intellectual property development
• National service
• University or CHOA service
• Division Chief comments
See the sample index, including the notes on the far right
side which provide information on why each section of the index
is included and what can be understood from it.
