Seed Grants
The purpose of the Seed Grants is generally to facilitate the
acquisition of extramural support for new and expanded basic and
clinical research efforts of beginning faculty. A number of seed
grant programs are available to faculty members in the Department
of Pediatrics. These include the following:
Emory Medical Care Foundation Research Grants
The EMCF provides grants up to $25,000 to support research by Emory
faculty who are based at Grady Health System for at least 50% of
their time. These grants are intended to support the research careers
of junior investigators and more senior investigators interested
in pursuing research. The grant program is designed to provide financial
support for clinical studies that are related to the health care
needs of the patients served by the Grady Health System or basic
science projects that have clinical significance. The small grant
program is meant to help individuals collect pilot data to be used
for submissions to external grant agencies, as well as to encourage
clinicians and educators to engage in clinical and basic science
research.
Amount: $25,000
Deadline: November 1, March 1, July 1 of each year
(see http://www.med.emory.edu/research/information/emcf-guidelines.html)
University Research Committee (URC)
The University Research Committee (URC), a standing committee of
the Faculty Council, is responsible for awarding small research
grants to University faculty. Research is defined as scholarly pursuit
according to the guidelines of your discipline. These funds are
intended to help researchers achieve short-term research goals that
can be accomplished in one year. The URC may provide up to $30,000
in short term (generally less than 1 year) funding. A joint URC/A-CTSA
program is available focusing on patient-oriented (though not necessarily
entirely patient-based) research. (See http://www.urc.emory.edu/).
Emory Egleston Children's Research Center Grants
Emory University employees are eligible for funds through the Emory
Egleston Children's Research Center (EECRC) which is funded jointly
by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University School
of Medicine. Guidelines for grant applications
can be downloaded
or contact Ron Joyner, MD for more information at 404-727-5747.
Health Systems Institute (HSI) Seed Grant Program
For GT/Emory faculty and/or Children’s investigators.
With funding from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, the College
of Engineering at Georgia Tech and the College of Computing at Georgia
Tech, the Health Systems Institute (HSI) has established a seed
grant funding program to foster and support innovative collaborative
and interdisciplinary research projects, with the goal of stimulating
critical improvements in health care. Research relates directly
to our research thrusts and applications in health care, and the
objectives of projects include an outcome that will benefit patients
(e.g. better diagnosis and treatment of diseases, inventions, patents,
licenses, and commercial products).
A scientific committee of experts from Georgia Tech, Children’s
and Emory evaluates proposals, submits recommendations to the sponsors
and provides administrative oversight. Each proposal is evaluated
based on: scientific merit; probable health care impact and significance;
and potential for commercialization and successfully obtaining further
support.

or contact Paula Edwards at 404-385-8191.
EmTech Bio Seed Grant Program
EmTech Biotechnology Development, Inc is inviting proposals from
Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology faculty for
funding under the EmTech Bio Seed Grant Program. The Program funds
research in the biomedical sciences. Beginning with the 2007-08
review cycle, the Emtech Bio Collaborative Seed Grant Program has
as its purpose the funding only of joint projects involving
faculty of both Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
In addition to strong scientific merit, proposals must show a well-defined
commercial opportunity – only projects with tangible commercial
applications are eligible. The Emtech Bio Grant program does not
support basic research or research to gather preliminary data for
NIH RO1 or equivalent grant submissions. This grant program is funded
through annual equal contributions from both institutions. Because
Emtech Biotechnology Development, Inc. is the sponsor; this grant
is classified by both Georgia Tech and Emory University as "externally
sponsored" funding. Therefore all proposals must be routed
thorough the Offices of Sponsored Programs.
See http://www.emtechbio.com/request.html
for further details.
Friends Research Fund
In 2000, Children’s community volunteers known as "Friends"
established a unique research initiative to fund Children’s
physicians' and fellows' clinical research projects that translated
directly to the improvement of quality care to Children's patients.
It was the first such fund for Children’s and the largest
volunteer funded project of its kind for all pediatric hospitals
according to the National Association of Children’s Hospitals
and Related Institutions (NACHRI). A designated portion of Friends'
annual fundraising efforts contributes to this fund.
Administered by the Clinical Research Oversight Committee (CROC),
the Friends Research Fund supports competitive grants up to $50,000
bi-annually. These grants are for well-defined research projects,
pilot studies and seed grants that typically last 6 to 18 months.
Applications are open to all members of the Children’s professional
staff that provide services on site in one of the Children’s
facilities.
The Friends Research Fund is accepting funding applications for
2008. The grant submission deadline is May 2, 2008. Download a complete
set of guidelines and application packet at http://www.choa.org/Menus/Documents/ForProfessionals/research/CROC%20app_guide_final.doc.
