I grew up in a Chicago suburb (Oak Brook, IL) and hope to eventually move back north one day. I had a wonderful time attending Saint Louis University for undergrad and medical school. I enjoy running and outdoor activities. When I have more time I would love to get back into crafting and drawing. And no matter how busy I am I always make room for my number passion - food.
Glaivy Batsuli was born and spent a very small part of her childhood in Brussels, Belgium. She then immigrated with her family, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, to North Carolina. She was raised and attended high school in Charlotte, where she enjoyed such activities as soccer, playing the upright bass player in various orchestras, and community outreach projects. She went on to receive a Public Health degree in Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was quickly bred into a lifelong Tarheel fan. Go Heels!!! After college she ventured outside the state of North Carolina and attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is where she was introduced to Indian & Thai food, real snow storms, the Steelers, and the amazing field of pediatrics. She enjoys cooking/baking, reality tv shows, watching college basketball games, attending cultural events such as broadway shows, and spending time with family and friends over a good meal. She is undecided of her future career path within the field of pediatrics, but is excited to be at Emory for her pediatrics residency.
I was born in Macon, GA and went to Mercer University. There, I majored in Biology and met my husband, Corbin, while studying archaeology in Greece. Having always known I wanted to be a pediatrician, I finished my undergraduate degree in three years and went straight to medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. In medical school, I did research in pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which led to my interest in pediatric hematology/oncology (one of the many reasons why I chose Emory for my residency). Outside of medicine, I enjoy baking, kayaking, hiking in the North Georgia mountains, spending time with my chihuahua, Penny, and traveling the world (I recently backpacked Europe with my husband) Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the program!
I was born in Taiwan but moved to Miami Florida when I was 3 years old. That is where I stayed until I attended college at Emory University where I graduated with a B.A. in psychology. I would spend the next 4 years in Rochester, NY where I obtained my M.D. degree at the University of Rochester. I have always enjoyed working with kids and knew that I wanted to be a pediatrician at the beginning of my medical training. Outside of work, I love to stay active whether it is playing tennis, basketball or road biking. I am also big fan of eating and trying out new restaurants and cuisines. You can’t forget about hanging out with friends and family. With that said, my number one hobby still has to be napping and sleeping in! I am excited to be back in Atlanta. Not only is it a great place to train but it is also a city filled with many things to do, to see and to eat!
I was born in Portland, Oregon, and raised in beautiful Northern California. My older brothers and parents were shocked when I decided to head east for undergrad at Asbury College, a tiny liberal arts college outside Lexington, Kentucky. I enjoyed the change of scene and ended up marrying my college sweetheart, Phil. He introduced me to Duke basketball and all other things ACC, and even proposed in Cameron Indoor Stadium. We moved to Atlanta a week after our honeymoon and now enjoy TV coverage of both ACC and SEC sports! I spent 2 years working in a lab until starting at Morehouse School of Medicine. I love to bake, Phil loves to grill, and we’ve both achieved “pro” status on Wii bowling.
Hi, I'm Kesha. I like reading science fiction and fantasy novels, playing video games, eating (anytime, anywhere), dancing, taking and looking at photos, travelling and of course, hanging out with friends. I went to Florida State University (Go NOLES!) and Emory for Medical School. I don't know what kind of pediatric doctor I want to be when I grow up.
Sarah Gard is a native Atlantan. For the past 8 years, she lived in New Orleans, Tampa and Pittsburgh, but Atlanta called her back for residency. She is busy planning a wedding, raising a 70 pound boxer-mastiff puppy, going out with her intern class and hanging out with her future hubby. She considers herself a foodie and likes to try a new restaurant in the Atlanta area weekly. Sarah is planning on going into Pediatric ER, a choice heavily influenced by her experience as an EMT in New Orleans during college at Tulane University. Sarah's favorite thing about the Emory residency program are the other residents and attendings; they're incredible! She states "I really could not imagine a better group: we work hard and play hard~!"
I grew up in Zimbabwe, moved to the US to attend Messiah College in Pennsylvania and then attended Penn State University for Medical School. After 8 years in the snow I desperately wanted to move somewhere warmer and happier, and was fortunate to match at Emory and move to lovely Atlanta! I've had the opportunity to work with children in developing countries and am pursuing a career in Global Health. I love living in Atlanta, there is so much to do and explore, and great restaurants. I've been able to enjoy festivals, art shows, music, nightlife and gorgeous sunny afternoons by the pool.
I am originally from Cincinnati Ohio, went to college at Miami University and University of Cincinnati for Medical School. I am a recent transplant to Atlanta GA. I like to hang out with friends, going to bars/clubs, eating tons of food, and I am junkie for "trash reality" TV.
Jocelyn is from Oxford, OH and graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine. She graduated from Harvard in 1997 with a BA in chemistry, working in Professor George Whitesides' lab with Milan Mrksich, PhD. After graduation she joined Peter Schultz's lab in the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley where she studied the biophysics of nucleic acid folding at the single molecule level using fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Following Peter Schultz's move to Scripps in 1999, Jocelyn completed her PhD in 2002 in Carolyn Bertozzi's lab where she studied the enzymes responsible for sulfation of glycoproteins involved in the inflammatory cascade. She was a Damon-Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow in Alan Frankel's lab at UCSF where she discovered a novel way to inhibit HIV replication through co-transcriptional targeting of a dominant negative peptide to the HIV promoter. Jocelyn is the proud mother of 3 year old Charlotte, and she is married to Peter Kner an assistant professor of engineering at the University of Georgia. She enjoys reading mystery stories, popular non-fiction books about medicine and science, swimming, hiking, sewing, and most importantly playing with her daughter. She is excited to be a part of the Emory Pediatrics Residency Program, being reunited with her husband, and moving to beautiful “Hotlanta”.
Erik is a transplant (a nice way to say Yankee), born in Michigan, but later moved to Stone Mountain, GA. Erik went to BYU for college, during which he took a two-year hiatus living in Colombia. After earning a BS in microbiology he then came back to Emory for medical school and an MPH. His research interests include how early-life infection or the hygiene hypothesis relates to leukemia (ALL) and how language barriers affect health outcomes in patients with limited English proficiency. Erik’s fan club includes his wife and daughter(s) – and they are looking to expand it. Hobbies include soccer, hiking or biking, and cooking anything spicy. When all is said and done Erik plans to work as a general pediatrician for several years before heading off to save the world, beginning in any given Latin American country (read interest in global health). For now, the Heisses are thrilled to continue training here at Emory and as part of the Emory/Atlanta community.
I was born in Minsk, Belarus and immigrated to the United States with my mom and brother when I was seven. We settled in Atlanta, Georgia where I graduated from high school and attended Emory University for a BS in Biology. Later on, I graduated from Morehouse School of Medicine. During one summer in medical school, while researching angiogenesis in Israel, I met my husband Jonathan. One of his many talents is making great sandwiches for hospital shifts. My hobbies include spending time with my husband, working in our vegetable garden, playing with my three kittens and Maggie the family dog, playing Backgammon, cooking, hiking, running, and singing in the rain. While my future plans are still unclear, I am very excited and proud to be joining the Emory pediatric program.
Jaime McKinney grew up in St. Louis, MO. She received a BS in Biology at Xavier University (Cincinnati) and was on the research track until she saw the light; decided to pursue medicine. She received her medical training at the University of Michigan. Although she will always be a die hard Wolverine, she relocated down south to escape the snow. Her hobbies include rollerskating and talking. She enjoys football, facebooking, and listening to music. She has interests in HIV/global health and plans to practice abroad during her 3rd year. She chose Emory Pediatrics because of its reputation, supportive faculty, and its location. Atlanta is a great place to live, work, and play. She looks forward to being warm all year long!
Allen is awesome. He's from Tennessee so that's pretty cool. Little children love him and everyone seems to want to become him. One time, when he was young, he got to play on a baseball team. He has consistently been nationally ranked the #2 speller in the country. He enjoys spending time with nature and getting to know the local trees in his neighborhood. The doctor thing is just a means to provide for his real passion: designing and painting miniature metalic models of lesser known members of the British Parliament. One time he held his breath for like 45 seconds. His favorite food is butter or anything that is soft and yellow. He enjoys shooting and starring in shortened versions of popular films moments after he watches them with his camera phone. He can lift like 100 pounds right over his head. Unfortunately ladies, he is married.
I attended The University of Virginia for undergrad where I studied Neuroscience, and then went home to the Hampton Roads area for medical school at EVMS. This is my first time leaving Virginia and I have my husband, Mark, and my Yorkshire terrier, Graydon, accompanying me. After my Pediatrics training, I will be entering a child Neurology training program. I enjoy dining out, dragging my husband to particularly cheesy chick-flicks, and going to the museums, aquarium, and zoo here in Atlanta. We are missing our walks on the beach, but enjoy the variety of adventures here for us in Atlanta.
I was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia and came to the U.S. after a stopover in Singapore to finish high school. Not quite sure of what I wanted to do, I majored in biology in undergrad, and by providence ended up at Wake Forest University for medical school. When it came time to pick a residency, my husband and I wanted to end up in a big city; Emory was the perfect program. We recently moved to Atlanta and have completely fallen in love with the city. I am a voracious reader, a lover of Woody Allen films and going to the opera, of trying out new foods and traveling to exotic places. Being children of a giant metropolis, my husband and I are completely ill at ease in nature, although we do occasionally accept invitations for a (gentle) hike or a stroll in the park. I know nothing about sports, but I will come along to selected games and yell as necessary given good company. International health is a long standing interest of mine, but currently I’m debating between a career as a hospitalist vs pursuing a fellowship. I’m excited to start training as a pediatrician here.
Although Indian by heritage, I never know how to answer the question: "where are you from?" My parents grew up in Kenya, I was born in London, and have been living in the Atlanta suburbs for the past 15 years. So, I guess that makes me Indian, African, British, and American....although, my Swahili could use some work. I received my Bachelor's degree from Agnes Scott College. And now, I'm very excited to be back in Atlanta and the Decatur area after four years of medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. In addition to taking care of children, I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with friends and family. Currently, I am learning to fish, play golf, and attempting to salsa dance. I love entertaining, cooking Indian food, and baking lots of desserts.
Originally from Knoxville, TN, I attended medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis where I was commonly found dancing a little jig on Beale Street after hours. Now that I've migrated south, I am spending most of my free time sampling Atlanta's bureaus with several venues left to try. I'm currently planning a trip to Greece in April, so all travel advice is welcome. Go Vols!!
Many things define “Chad” but the first and foremost being that he is, and will forever remain, a child at heart. Disney World is his favorite vacation spot. He prefers comic books over Stephen King and John Grisham. It is who he is. And it is for that reason that Chad became a pediatrician. He went to medical school in Augusta, GA at the Medical College of Georgia and is delighted to be a member of Emory’s pediatric residency program. For undergrad, he attended and played baseball for the University of Georgia. While matriculating at UGA, he acquired a very common coagulation disorder shared by many Georgians where one routinely bleeds red and black on Saturdays during the fall. He is married to a beautiful brown-eyed girl named Rebecca who recently graduated from the UGA School of Law and will be working at a firm in Atlanta. Life outside of the hospital consists of movie/date nights, video games, fantasy books, and his puppy dog Ginny (named after Ginny Weasley). He can be found most free afternoons playing Rock Band or rereading his favorite book, Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card.
Lauren was born in Houston TX and has lived most of her life north of Atlanta. After high school she went to UGA and majored in journalism (which she uses on a daily basis writing many, many notes). After a year hiatus she went to The Medical College of GA in Augusta, Ga where the only thing she will miss is: tickets to The Master’s. She is very excited to be back in Atlanta and at Emory. In her spare time she enjoys: reading magazines (US weekly and People to name a few), trying new restaurants, long trail runs, concerts at Chastain, being outdoors at her family’s farm, finding any excuse to go back to Athens, Ga (have not seen UGA beat UF in person…but am wistfully hopeful), and wine nights with friends. After residency, Lauren is almost sure she wants to do General Pediatrics and live on a lake in the mountains with 2 dogs and family.
Melissa grew up in Blairsville, GA. She is the oldest in a family of twelve siblings, and loves visiting the mountains to see them. She went to Davidson College in North Carolina for four years, then returned to Atlanta for medical school at Emory University. She is happily married and has two very spoiled pet kitties. In her free time, she loves going to the park, hiking and camping, playing hearts, and eating at the Flying Biscuit.
Sarah was born and raised just outside of Houston, TX. After college at Rhodes in Memphis, Sarah moved to Atlanta for medical school at Emory. During her time at Emory, she also completed her public health degree in epidemiology and she met and married her husband Brent. She was excited to stay at Emory for pediatrics. Her future is still undecided (any advice?) but she is interested in hospital medicine, vaccines, healthcare systems research, and neonatology. In her spare time, she likes to hang out with Brent, their two dogs, Scout and Grady (yes, like the hospital) and friends; cook; garden; attend ballet classes; explore Atlanta restaurants; and work through her Netflix list (Milk is next!).
Matthew was born in Chapel Hill, NC, and grew up in Durham, NC. The pinnacle of his youth occurred at the tender age of 8, when he appeared in the opening scene of Bull Durham. Knowing nothing can top appearing in the finest sports movie ever made, he then went to Williams College, where he received a B.A. in Psychology. Following college, he was accepted to Teach For America and taught second grade in Atlanta Public Schools system for 2 years. During that time, Matt also coached girl’s soccer at Price Middle School. He then returned to North Carolina, where he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The highlight of those years was seeing the Tar Heels bring home the National Championship in 2004 and storming Franklin St. He currently enjoys music and concerts, computers, attending Hawks and Braves games, and, of course, watching and reading all things UNC basketball. GO HEELS!!!
I am a Georgia girl. I grew up in Atlanta. I attended the University of Georgia for undergrad and became a huge Bulldawg fan. I then moved to Augusta to attend medical school at Medical College of Georgia. My husband Cason and I got married just before the start of intern year. I love to go to Georgia football games whenever I can!
I attended Emory University School of Medicine. I enjoy jogging, running, skiing, and swimming.
I am from Lagos, Nigeria and went to College at University of Richmond and received a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences after which I went to Medical School at Indiana University School of Medicine. I enjoy cooking, traveling, music and keeping in touch with friends and family. I love working with kids, being in Atlanta and being around family and friends.
Karen Eastburn, DO is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine. As an Emory Pediatrics resident she returns to her birthplace Atlanta, and returns to Emory where she graduated undergrad with degrees in Biology and Music. She also holds a Masters of Science degree from Georgia State University. Prior to medical school she enjoyed research at Emory and at Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Oregon. She attended high school in Carmel, Indiana. As a violinist she can be heard performing baroque chamber music with the St. Cecilia Consort of First Presbyterian of Atlanta and other musical offerings around town. Karen enjoys running, and she trained for and ran her first marathon during intern year. She also enjoys sunshine, movies, visiting family, and sleep.
Andrea Green is a native of Roswell, Ga., a suburb just north of Atlanta. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a major in Genetics and minor and Child and Family Development. She then continued her education at the Medical College of Georgia. In her free time she enjoys trying new restaurants, baking cupcakes, running a mile or two, biking on the sidewalk, cheering on the Dawgs, and most of all spending time with family, friends and kittens Quinn and Murmur.
Lauren Hall is currently a second year resident with interests in general pediatrics, global maternal & child health, infectious disease, and nutrition. She is a native Atlantan, attended both college and med school at Emory, and studied ID at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She loves running, being outdoors, books, photography/writing, and strawberry ice cream.
Hi! I’m a proud native Floridian – I grew up in sunny Cocoa Beach, FL – (think “I Dream of Jeannie, Ron Jon and snowbirds – LOTS of snowbirds). I earned my B.S Degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida in Tampa (GO BULLS!!!) and after college moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse School of Medicine. I’m thrilled to remain in Atlanta to pursue my medical training here at Emory. In my free time I love to try out new recipes, host dinner parties and find new restaurants – and yes, my life does revolve around food! Oh, I also can be found every Sunday during football season in front of the TV with NFL Sunday Ticket (highly recommended). I’m very interested in the Public Health and Health Policy and plan to pursue a career in private practice and remain active in the politics of medicine.
My name is Jaime Knight. I was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia and attended Medical College of Virginia for Medical school. I decided to choose Emory for Residency because of it's reputation of being a very diverse program that allows us to care for complex children as well as plenty of "bread and butter" pediatric cases. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling (especially to the Caribbean), dancing, movies, and spending time with friends. My ultimate goal is to become a general Pediatrician or hospitalist.
I am from a small town in the heart of North Carolina (Sanford). I attended Davidson College (former home of Stephen Curry!) For medical school, I went to UNC. I wanted to move to a big city for residency and thought Atlanta and Emory were perfect, so I finally left North Carolina. I enjoy trying out new restaurants in Atlanta, cooking, reading, traveling, watching trashy television shows, and of course watching college basketball.
Jada grew up in Statesboro, Georgia and attended Georgia Southern where she received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia and obtained her Masters in Nursing. After completion, she got married to an Atlanta native, Chuck Olderman. She obtained her Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from UAB and then decided to go to medical school. She attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. During her 3rd year, Jada and Chuck had a wonderful daughter, Addie Olderman, who is the joy of their lives.
I received my MD and PhD from the University of Florida and my research interests are in the field of molecular virology. In addition to watching our alma mater win national championships at the expense of other SEC schools, my wife of 11 years, Erica, and I enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and snorkeling in our free time. Erica is a professor of Spanish at a local university, and shamefully I speak hardly a lick of Spanish. I hope someday to figure out what she and all her friends are saying about me. In the longer term, I plan to pursue a fellowship, most likely in Infectious Diseases.
Reanne Parrenas was born in Baguio City, Philippines before moving to the United States with her family at the age of five. She lived in Dalton, Georgia (yes, the carpet capital of the world) until she left to study Microbiology with the Dawgs at the University of Georgia. While there, she met her fiancé Erik during her senior year. After graduation, Reanne conducted research on Salmonella at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for two years prior to attending medical school at Mercer University. Outside of pediatrics, she loves traveling, eating out, running, and spending time with her family, especially her two adorable nephews and beautiful niece. She plans on learning how to cook someday and getting back into drawing. She and Erik will be married in the fall of 2010
I grew up in Denver, Colorado went to college in St. Louis, med school in DC and now have enjoyed my big move down to Georgia. Growing up in Colorado, I didn’t know much about Atlanta except for that it is the home of Coke, CNN and the dreaded Braves. It turns out Atlanta has much more to do than I have time to explore. In my free time I’m learning how to cook, I like hiking (Georgia has some great camping areas), and I have high goals to eat at every sushi restaurant in the city. My academic interests are in the areas of public health, infectious diseases and oncology. I did an MPH at George Washington University in DC and plan on doing a rotation or two at the CDC during residency. I do most of my learning from my fellow residents, who have proved to be excellent teachers and great people to be awake with at 3am. Overall I’ve loved moving to the south… I can even been seeing eating a boiled peanut from time to time and yes, occasionally, I root for the Braves.
I was born and raised in a suburb outside Denver, Colorado. I grew up fly fishing, hiking and camping in the nearby Rocky Mountains. I am very fortunate to have an extremely loving family and a great group of friends I have known since elementary school. After graduating from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, I headed down south to New Orleans, LA for graduate school and medical school at Tulane University. I’m proud of my Rocky Mountain roots and recent southern style. I’m excited to extend my southern journey at Emory and learn about a new city. When not focused on academic pursuits, I enjoy playing large games of red-rover, tag, tetherball and/or hopscotch.
I am an Atlanta native and love being in this city (despite the traffic). In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with my family. I plan on going into general pediatrics and have an interest in global health.
Kathleen, who prefers to be called Kat, was born in the Philippines and emigrated to the Sunshine state (California) at the age of 6. She grew up in San Francisco where she enjoyed the fog, the Golden Gate Bridge and the endless streets of Chinatown. A cheerleader at heart, her claim to fame is that her squad placed 4th at a regional competition. Kat moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA (Go Bruins!) where she pursued both Molecular Biology and Spanish degrees. She became an avid extracurricular guru, tutoring immigrant children, working as a research assistant and planning activities for her Co-Ed Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. After graduating from college, Kat worked as a Lab Manager for the Neurology Division at UCLA where she grew astrocytes and perfected her pipetting skills. She then moved to New Haven to complete a MPH degree at Yale University, which included a 3-month stint learning Portuguese and collecting thesis data in Brazil. Desiring to be a physician, she attended St. George’s University in Grenada for medical school. Crystal clear beaches, snorkeling, and tropical weather became her best friends. Kat moved to New York City to complete her 3rd and 4th year clerkships where she had an epiphany--she loved Pediatrics. She completed her Pediatric intern year at SUNY Stonybrook and transferred to Emory for the remainder of her Pediatric residency. She plans to work as a General Pediatrician with a primary interest as a health provider and advocate for underserved populations.
Zarana grew up with her 4 sisters and parents in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA. She recently got engaged to her fiancé, Subir. Both went to undergrad in “Happy Valley,” home of the Penn State Nittany Lions. Zarana then went on to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where she earned her medical degree. For a change of pace, she finally moved down to the warm south to pursue her residency in pediatrics. She enjoys watching the Philadelphia Eagles play (when their games are actually broadcast in the south!), spending time outdoors, watching movies, and making arts and crafts.
Kaneeze-Fatema Bukhari was born in India and immigrated to the US with her parents when she was less than a year old. Buddy is an engineer and they are celebrating 9 years of marriage this year! After residency Lorie will be staying at Emory for a fellowship in Endocrinology which she is very excited about!
I was born in Boston and lived there briefly before moving as a child to Atlanta. I stayed here for college at Emory University, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chinese. For medical school, I attended Medical College of Georgia in Augusta before returning to Atlanta for residency. I have spent most of my life in Atlanta and enjoy it here, but I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively, and hope to continue to do so in the future. I would like to travel with my husband and newborn son. I also enjoy cooking, reading, swimming, and scuba diving. I plan on staying in Atlanta to practice general pediatrics.
A Double Hoo, Swati is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia, where she received her B.S. She enjoys music, particularly the Beatles and collects their vinyl records. She is a Steelers fan, watching the team’s sixth Super Bowl win on her honeymoon in Peru.
Anita is a military brat who calls everywhere home, and who still gets the itch to move every 5 years or so. She absolutely loves learning as evidenced by her educational history. She spent 4 years at University of Maryland where she earned a BS in Microbiology, and 4 years at University of California, San Diego where she earned a PhD in Biology while studying the molecular pathogenesis of CMV. After 3 years in the real world at USAMRIID studying emerging viruses in BSL-4, she decided to go back to school and spent the next 4 years at GW where she earned her MD. She is currently taking advantage of the American Board of Pediatrics Integrated Research Pathway, which is an alternative residency tract that allows physician scientists time to work in the lab during their residency. Her work on emerging viruses is ongoing at the CDC in the Special Pathogens Branch and she will continue this work as a fellow in the Emory Pediatrics ID department next year. Ultimately, she plans to work internationally in the field of global health.
As a native Georgian I grew up in Mableton, a suburb of the Atlanta area. I completed by undergraduate degree in Biology at Emory University and then went to Mercer University School of Medicine. My husband Chris and I are glad to be back in the Atlanta area for my residency training close to friends and family. When not busy at work we like to spend time with our dogs Parker Dude and Rowdy who love to go on walks and go swimming. I also enjoy cooking, reading, and shopping.
I grew up along with my younger brother in Lake Orion, Michigan, a small suburb of Detroit. I attended Oakland University majoring in Biochemistry before moving to Cleveland Ohio to attend Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. I moved with my to Atlanta to begin Pediatrics Residency at Emory while he attends Georgia Tech. Residency has been highlighted by marrying my co-resident Jessica Doyle and recently having our baby son William. I now spend most of my time encouraging him to become a Detroit sports fan as well as reading, traveling, cooking, and playing golf.
I'm a 3rd year peds resident at Emory, a little place I'd like to call home. I'm from Toledo, Ohio, also known as the city you grow up in and then move away from.
My academic interests are in the area of Emergency Medicine, and I plan on doing a fellowship in Peds EM. First, I plan on moving to Chile for a year and working in hospitals down there, to get a new perspective and to have a little fun. I also plan on working with physicians down there to help lobby for additional vaccine coverage for children and general child advocacy. My nonacademic interests -- and there are many -- include traveling, politics, playing guitar, golf, disc golf, improving my spanish, building stuff, etc.
Keyana is from Clarksdale, MS, a small town in the Mississippi Delta and the birthplace of the blues. She considered Emory for her undergraduate education but was overwhelmed by the big city lights and traffic. So, instead, she attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford where she earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences. After graduation, she decided to give the big city a try. She moved to Emory University where she earned an MD and MPH and discovered her love of children. She and her husband, Cedric, were very excited when she matched at Emory for Pediatrics Residency. Keyana plans to join a private pediatric group in Atlanta after finishing residency.
