Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center launches the Aflac Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee

The Aflac DEI Committee, led by Dr. Tamara New, will focus on patient care equity; promotion, retention and recruitment; education and training; and research. The mission of the committee is to create an environment of equity and inclusion where all providers, staff, and visitors feel respected and supported. The overall goal is to provide optimal care, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, physical ability, and gender identity. In the process, we hope to contribute to increasing equity globally.

Joanna Newton Nominated for ASPHO Leadership Role
Dr. Newton was nominated by Special Interests Group (SIG) leadership and elected to serve as Vice Chair of the ASPHO Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS). She will be responsible for helping to set annual objectives, plan programming throughout the year for membership, and organize the session at the annual conference.

Fertility Preservation Program Hits Milestone with 1,000 Evaluations
Dr. Lillian Meacham and her team successfully completed their 1,000th fertility evaluation at the beginning of April. The team sees patients before cancer treatment or bone marrow transplant (including non-oncology patients). They also complete fertility status assessments for adolescents and young adults following treatment. This successful team includes Dr. Meacham (Director), Megan Pruitt, NP, James Ludemann, RN, Sonia Hoey, RN, Drs. Krista Childress and Wolfgang Cerwinka. Drs. James Klosky and Brooke Cherven lead the research effort for the program.

'The Atlanta Protocol' Expanding through MOTIVATE Study
Dr. Robert Sidonio’s MOTIVATE study stems from the success of Atlanta Protocol and this approach will determine the safety and effectiveness of treatments for patients with severe Hemophilia A, expanding internationally and across multiple sites. 'The Atlanta Protocol' was developed by Drs. Sidonio, Glaivy Batsuli, and Shannon Meeks.

Wilbur Lam Receives Georgia Bio Golden Helix Award
Georgia Bio presents Distinguished Deal of the Year Award to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology for receiving $18.2 million to continue their verification of COVID-19 diagnostic tests as part of the NIH Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative.

Annual ASPHO Conference
The 2021 American Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology conference (ASPHO) took place virtually on April 21-24. Thank you to all of our faculty, staff and fellows who participated in moderating, speaking, poster presentations, and more. Special recognition goes to Dr. Karen Effinger on co-chairing the meeting in her role of Vice Chair of the ASPHO Planning Committee, as well as Dr. Chris Porter who is also on the Planning Committee. Congratulations to Drs. Holly Edington and Diana Fridyland, recipients of 2021 ASPHO Early Career Awards.

AztraZeneca Announces Collaboration with Sanguina on New Smartphone Application Study
Research-based health platform company, Sanguina, co-founders Erika Tyburski and Dr. Wilbur Lam, announced a collaboration with AstraZeneca on a study to develop a custom version of AnemoCheck Mobile, a smartphone application that provides noninvasive and equipment-free hemoglobin (Hgb) levels for patients with anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
